IWFF Dortmund Cologne 2012_The Winners:

Belma Baş Wins International Debut Feature Award 2012

The 2012 Dortmund|Cologne International Women’s Film Festival has come to an end on Sunday evening with the awarding of its main prize to the Turkish film director Belma Baş for her film ZEFIR.

A total of four awards were conferred during the festival’s official closing ceremony which was held Sunday evening in Cologne’s Odeon Cinema.The International Debut Feature Award for Women Film Directors, which comes with a prize of 10,000 EUR, goes to Turkish film director Belma Baş and her film ZEFIR. In translation, the title means “a soft breeze blowing from the west” and is taken from the mythological name for Zephyr, the jealous God of the West Wind. Ms Baş tells the story of the eleven-year-old Zefir who, having been ditched by her mother, spends the summer at her grandparents in the countryside. Against the background of the majestic highland and forest scenery of the Turkish Black Sea region, the girl waits each day for her mother to return. The director finds breathaking pictures to project the deceptive idyll that is nature. Read more

The next edition of the festival will take place in Dortmund in April 2013 in Dortmund.

There is a proposal for an interesting event held by the Women’s Film and Television History Network and supported by WMSN on the weekend beginning:

  • Fri 20 July – Pat Murphy retrospective at the Irish Film Institute followed by Q&A at IFI.
  • Followed by workshop at Trinity College Dublin; proposed title: “Women Making History: Film and Television”.

The Women’s Library Under Threat – Campaign and Petition

Please see the letter below about the Women’s Library:

Many of you will have heard that The Women’s Library in London is facing closure and transfer of its collections, or being reduced to operating a skeleton service. London Metropolitan University have decided to attempt to find a new home, owner or sponsor for its holdings, and will reduce the service to one day per week if such a sponsor cannot be found by the end of 2012.

At the time of writing, nearly 5,000 people have signed a petition – set up by a concerned member of staff at the University – to save The Women’s Library in its present form…” Read more.

Call For Papers – New extended deadline until 23 April 2012

Speakers are invited to present papers relevant to the theme of the conference which should ideally fit into one or more of the following strands:
