A Message from Sarah Arnold and the Maynooth University DWFTH V Team
We are profoundly disappointed to have to announce the postponement of the Doing Women’s Film & Television History V conference at Maynooth University, May 20-22nd 2020.
The conference organising committee, the WFTHN-UK/Ireland and the University have monitored the development of the COVID-19 outbreak. Given the rising number of cases in Ireland, the Irish government took special measures on 12 March to restrict on-campus teaching and indoor gatherings of more than 100 people. This will extend until 29 March at the earliest and possibly beyond this date. We had hoped that the situation would have de-escalated but, unfortunately, this is increasingly unlikely.
Given the daily announcements from across Europe regarding travel restrictions and social distancing, health concerns for visitors to Ireland and the university, and the uncertainty created by an indefinite period of isolation, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the 2020 conference.
We are in preliminary talks to host the next conference in either 2021 or 2022 and will publish information on this when the Network and conference organisers are able to confirm dates and details, although given the current uncertainty a final decision cannot be made immediately. We would like to thank everyone for their wonderful submissions and very much hope that we can come together in the near future to share our research and insights. We will continue to accept submissions for the special issue of Alphaville, details are available here. We thank the network, the many fantastic conference contributors and guest speakers and those who supported the conference organisation. We feel the loss, but at the same time we are a strong community regardless of location.
All the best in difficult times.
The DWFTH V conference organising committee
