CFP: Visionaries: Thinking Through Women Filmmakers

The Visionaries team are pleased to announce that the first six volumes of the Visionaries Series are forthcoming in 2019:

Kelly McWilliam, An Oeuvre of Outsiders
Michelle Royer, MarAna Kokkinos: guerite Duras: Feminine Subjectivity and Sensoriality
Emma Wilson, Celine Sciamma: Girlhoods
Geetha Ramanathan, The Black Essai Cinema: Kathleen Collins
Sheila Petty, Algerian Memory Narrative:  Habiba Djahnine
Julia Erhart, The Cinema of Gillian Armstrong

We are now seeking proposals for further volumes on individual women filmmakers, and would particularly welcome proposals on Andrea Arnold, Kathryn Bigelow, Shirley Clarke, Julie Dash, Agnieska Holland, Kirsten Johnson, Margarethe von Trotte, Ana Lily Amirpour, Shirin Neshat, Amma Assante, Marta Meszaros, Deepa Mehta, Ava du Vernay and Jessica Hausner.

We are also looking to expand the focus of Visionaries to include filmmakers who are star directors and producers, such as Drew Barrymore or Maggie Cheung, or editors such as Thelma Schoonmaker of Alma Hitchcock. This is a way of opening out the series to non-standard filmmakers, inviting proposals that examine invisible labour or shifts in career development.

We are also interested in proposals that examine filmmakers from movements or waves in national or political contexts whose individual bodies of work may not as yet invite a whole volume by themselves. For example, a volume on Carol Morley, Clio Barnard and Amma Assante from the British context, or Forough Farrokhzad, Rakshan Bani-Etemad amd Samira Makhmalbaf  from Iran.
